If you've been convicted of a crime in a trial you do not have to accept a guilty ruling. You are entitled to appeal the conviction and ask for a new trial. An appeal is not a retrial, the transcripts from the original trial are reviewed to ensure the proceedings were conducted in a fair manner.

During appellate reveiw of a conviction, judges look through trial transcripts and review any exhibits used in the trial to determine if errors may have occured that affected the outcome of the trial.
